À l’aube de l’adolescence, il commence à vendre du crack et effectue des visites fréquentes en prison. <br />Au milieu des années 90, il décide de se distancer du crime pour se consacrer au rap. Sa chance tourne en 1996 alors qu’il fait la connaissance de Jam Master Jay, le DJ de Run-D.M.C. qui lui donne une cassette sur laquelle il doit improviser. Impressionné, Jay lui offre un contrat de disques. Les résultats se font attendre. <br /> <br />Entre temps, il rencontre les producteurs Trackmasters qui lui permettent d’amorcer le travail sur un premier album, « Power of the dollar ». Trois simples précèdent la sortie du disque dont « How to rob » dans lequel il décrit comment il s’y prendrait pour voler certains rappeurs connus. <br /> <br />L’album attire l’attention par son approche directe. Lors du lancement du simple « How to rob », 50 Cent passe à deux doigts de la mort alors qu’il est poignardé à cinq reprises dans les rues de Manhattan. Peu de temps après, le 24 mai 2000, on tente une seconde fois de l’abattre dans Queens tirant à neuf reprises avec une arme de calibre 9mm. Une balle perce sa joue, une autre sa main et les sept autres se logent dans sa cuisse et sa jambe. L’incident est suffisant pour pousser Columbia (SONY) à ne pas lancer l’album, jugeant le rappeur trop controversé. <br /> <br />Au cours des deux années qui suivent, 50 Cent retourne à ses racines dans l’underground new-yorkais formant notamment un collectif, le G Unit. Il en profite pour faire de nouveaux enregistrements qui lui valent une solide réputation dans les rues de New York. Ces enregistrements lui permettent d’attirer l’attention de l’industrie à nouveau, d’autant plus que Eminem n’hésite pas à avouer, lors d’une entrevue à la radio, qu’il a énormément d’admiration pour 50 Cent. Il n’en faut pas plus pour que les grandes étiquettes se lancent dans une guerre pour mettre le rappeur sous contrat. <br /> <br />Malgré tout, c’est Eminem qui a le dernier mot et qui signe 50 Cent en compagnie de son complice de toujours, Dr. Dre. Au cours des mois qui suivent, 50 Cent prépare Get rich or die tryin' .
